Are you invested in an S&P 500 index fund?
Yes
Yes!
Yes!
Awesome explanation. A person, in my opinion, should have S&P 500 or Russell 1000 index mutual fund in his IRA, and contribute to it the same amount every month rain or shine. Then, when he is a granpa, he does not have to sit next to a church with an upside down hat.
I agree, the Russell 1000 index fund will do as well. I also recommend it outside of retirement. Then you might not have to wait until you’re Grandpa to retire.
At 1:45 you said that you have a mutual fund and an ETF with vanguard. I m curious to know why you have both
Great question. I have different accounts with Vanguard for example, a regular brokerage and a IRA. At the time of picking up the ETF, I didn’t have the $3000 minimum to invest in their Mutual fund, so I bought an ETF for $300 something at the time. There is no real reason to have both.
People say the S&P 500 is ‘overpriced’ and ‘overvalued’ does this mean it is better not to invest now? Best wishes to you all.
Great question, if you plan to Dollar Cost Average into it over a long period of time, the price today doesn’t matter. If you’re trying to use the money within a year, that is another story. I hope that helped.
I was looking at investing $200 into Vanguard S&P 500 every month and looking to take it out in around 20 ish years. Is this a good investment with how it is currently valued and would it be looking at a 7-8% return in your opinion? Many thanks.
It’s where I put 95% of my investment dollars every month and hold 98% of my wealth there. I would say chances are you I’ll get closer to an 8-10% return on average they way things have been going.
@Urban Finance very helpful – thanks again 👍
I’m a little confused in honesty as a newbie to investing. Ive recently put money into the vangaurd s&p500 etf on trading 212. At the moment its about £65 per share here in the UK, i started with a single share to see what kind of return i could expect in dividends with a larger investment…i got around 28 pence. From research i’ve noticed that the returns are very low right now but it has me concerned that i would need to invest a lot of money (perhaps thousands) if i wanted to build good dividend returns. Yesterday i started a strategy of just putting money in monthly. I honestly dont know if this is vaible for the ammount i would need to invest.
Thanks great info. Im new in SP 500. I’m 55, planning to move money out from variable annuity
