What is the "Dow Jones"?
Whether you are watching TV, reading the headlines, or talking with friends, perhaps you have heard some reference to "the Dow Jones". At the core, this is a way to gauge and understand the USA's broader economy; however, there are several moving parts that go into it that should be understood. If you are looking to learn more about the stock market and how the economy in general works, this is one of the first pieces of the puzzle that needs to be understood.

I like how recent most of the views on this video are! probably as a direct result of dow falling over the corona virus scares. So Clay, would you say we’re in the trouble? There has been legitimate worry about an another recession, even before this whole corona virus thing.

Hello claytrader I’m a student from Nepal just want to thank for providing such an informational video.
Glad it was helpful!
I am not sure what has been said here that higher value companies disproportionately influence the Dow, is correct. Dow is purely price weighted, and therefore just influenced by the stock price movements. What this guy has explained in a nutshell is the S&P index which is market weighted. Reader (or should I say, watcher) beware, I think!
This is true.
While I was reading news, I saw this statement: “if this gauge drops 500 points, that means the aggregate prices of the 30 components went down about $76”, or “the level of 275 for the Dow Jones …” I don’t know what the movement of the Dow Jones point really means and how to calculate it into $
It’s just a way to show whether the overall markets had a profitable day or not.
@ClayTrader oh, so 900 is the highest point of the Dow Jones, in other words, the most profitable point of the market, right?
right
You’re doing a good Deed bro, Thx a lot.

You’re welcome!
Good explaining thanks
You are welcome
DJIA is no longer relevant. I’ve almost never heard an active trader mention the Dow because it’s only 30 arbitrary companies that aren’t broadly representative of the economy in the same way the S&P is.
It’s 100% relevant.
Good job. You really simplified it
Glad it was helpful!
When you say higher value/higher influence are you referring to a company’s share price?
Correct.
