Financial literacy is the thing. I’m 25 and just learning this. There’s lots of people who don’t learn this at all or wait until their too old to build big portfolios. Knowing finance is the single most important thing in ones life. You have to know how to earn, how to save, how to invest and how to spend

Would an original investor in the Dow Jones industrial average in 1896 have lost money since this video mentioned that all the companies that originally made up the Dow no longer exist?

    1. TD Ameritrade says:
      November 14, 2020 at 12:07 pm

Hey Alex! Investors can’t invest directly in the index, and could only invest in funds that seek to model the index. That being said, the companies which make up the index can and will change over time, so one company in the index going out of business does not necessarily lower the value of the index itself. ^ZB

Why DJI insists unreasonable price weight instead of marketcap weight??

    1. TD Ameritrade says:
      March 18, 2021 at 5:32 pm

This is a great question. I am not able to tell you why the Dow is weighted as it is, other than that is how it was designed. As the video mentioned, historically it has been a fairly good indicator of the US market. It is important for investors to understand this weighting so that when the Dow moves they can gauge whether the move indicates a change in the market overall or if the weighting is more reflective of just one or two companies, such as is the example provided of Boeing’s affect. This is why it is good to check more than one index. Each index uses different methods to try to gauge the market or a particular sector. An informed investor will find the index which can best reflect their own investments and strategies. ^cb

May I ask how can I obtain profit by investing on Dow Jones Index please?

    1. TD Ameritrade says:
      April 2, 2021 at 6:45 am

Since the Dow is an index, it can’t be traded directly. However, there are many securities which seek to model the performance of the Dow. You can use the screener tools on our website to search for index mutual funds or ETFs which meet your needs. We can help at 800-669-3900. ^ZB
